Effective communication at all levels: A great area manager can engage not only with the grass roots of their area but also their peer group and line manager. They should be approachable for everyone including their sales staff and have a flexible leadership style. They need to be able to judge how to effectively manage a situation and employ a variety of styles of leadership to suit the situation, not one size fits all.
Sharing success: An area manager needs to be able to share the success of a project not just on their area but for the greater good of the business and see the bigger picture.
Innovative: The area manager needs to be willing to challenge the status quo and continually drive results. They should embrace new ways of working which will improve the business, even if the business is already doing well. It shouldn't be a case of “if it's not broken don't fix it” – they should think “okay so I'm 10% up, now how do I get to 20% up”.
